In Flower this Week:
The not-so-humble Marigold (20 November 2014) This common granny plant of yesteryear is anything but – both Calendula or pot Marigold (Calendula officinalis), and Field Marigold (C. arvensis), have many cultural and medicinal qualities including, but by no means exclusive, companion plant, beneficial insect attractor, anti-inflammatory and wound healer, and nutritious and colourful salad ingredient (leaves and flowers). And yes, they may be a bit ‘every day’, but you must admit this garden staple has the most vibrant flowers and extended flowering period. Avoid planting them near vulnerable areas such as nature reserves and bushland though, as these gems self-seed readily. |
